Semis, terraces and newer closes
Harrowgate Hill ward was about 55% semi-detached in the 2021 Census, with detached and terraced houses each making up around 22%. Most households owned their home (78%), and nearly two in five had two or more cars.
Closer to North Road the houses are older and the front gardens shorter. Off Salters Lane North, closes like Mistral Drive and Oakwood Drive have later detached houses, many already with a drive that is starting to show its age.

Smaller plots, same standard
A single parking space in front of a semi needs the same build as a big drive: dig out, compact a stone base, fit solid edging and make sure water has somewhere to go. The cheap version, paving laid on soil with no edging, starts to sink and spread within a couple of winters.
On shorter plots, gravel in a grid and block paving are practical choices because both can be laid permeable. Tarmac with a block edge is a good fit for the later detached houses, and resin bound suits owners after a smooth, modern look.

Clay under the ward
The British Geological Survey maps Harrowgate Hill on till, a dense glacial clay. It drains slowly and moves with wet and dry seasons. We set the depth of dig from a test hole and use a separating membrane where the clay is soft, so the stone base stays clean and firm.
Kerbs on and off the main road
The A167 is a classified road, and Darlington Borough Council notes that planning permission may be needed for a new access onto a classified road as well as the highways licence. On the side streets and closes only the licence is needed. Either way the council checks for nearby trees, lamp columns, telegraph poles and junctions before it approves a crossing.
Questions people ask
Can I park on the front garden of a Harrowgate Hill semi?
Usually, with a council-approved dropped kerb and a garden deep enough to fit the car inside the boundary.
What if my house is on North Road?
A new access onto a classified road may need planning permission as well as the highways licence. We check before you apply.
Which surface is easiest to look after?
Resin bound and pattern imprinted concrete have no joints for weeds. Block paving needs the odd re-sand but is easy to repair.
