An estate built with drives
Whinfield ward had a higher share of detached houses than most of Darlington in the 2021 Census, about 34%, alongside 42% semi-detached. Around 35% of households had two or more cars. The estate was planned for the car, so most houses have a drive and many have a garage, but the original surfaces are now thirty to fifty years old.
The signs are familiar: tarmac crazed and greyed, concrete slabs cracked and rocking, paving that has dipped where cars stand. Owners usually want a cleaner, more modern finish, and resin bound and grey or charcoal block paving are popular upgrades on these brick elevations.

Resurface or start again?
If the original drive was built on a decent stone base and is still level, a new surface can often go straight over it. Resin bound and new tarmac both work as overlays, and avoiding a dig-out saves time and spoil. If the base was thin, or decades of freeze and thaw have broken it up, the only lasting fix is to take it out and build a new one. We decide on site, often by lifting a small section to see what is underneath.

Water and the garage door
The British Geological Survey maps Whinfield on till, a dense glacial clay that does not let water soak away quickly. Many Whinfield drives also fall towards the garage. Put those together and you get puddles at the door and water under it. A slot or channel drain across the drive in front of the garage, connected to a soakaway or an existing drain, solves it, and we include it in the quote where it is needed.
Widening the crossing
When a Whinfield drive is widened to fit a second car alongside the first, the dropped kerb may need extending too. Darlington Borough Council treats that as an amendment to the crossing and applies the same checks as for a new one, including distance from street trees and lamp columns.
Questions people ask
Can my old Whinfield drive be resurfaced?
Often, if the base is level and sound. Cracked, rocking or sunken drives need digging out and a new base first.
What surface modernises a 1980s house?
Resin bound in a silver or natural blend, or block paving in grey or charcoal. Tarmac with a paved edge is the plainer option.
How do I stop water pooling at the garage?
A channel drain across the drive in front of the door, with the drive laid to fall towards it.
