Wide frontages on Mowden's streets
Mowden ward is overwhelmingly semi-detached: the 2021 Census counted about 59% semis and 29% detached houses, and only 2% terraced. It is also a place of long-term owners, with around 87% of households owning their home and more than half owning it outright. Nearly four in ten households had two or more cars.
Those numbers explain the street scene. The 1930s and post-war semis on roads like Barnes Road and Fulthorpe Grove have wide gardens in front, and many were converted to parking long ago. A typical Mowden enquiry is about widening a single drive to take two cars, or lifting a worn surface and starting again.

Replacing an older drive
Where the existing base is sound, we can sometimes lay new tarmac or a resin bound surface over it, which avoids digging out and carting away tonnes of spoil. Where the old drive has dipped in the wheel tracks, cracked across, or was laid straight onto soil, it has to come up. Widening a drive is a chance to sort the levels too, so water runs to a border or a drain rather than towards the garage door.
Block paving in brindle or charcoal is the look many Mowden owners go for, and it can be extended neatly when a drive is widened. Resin bound suits houses that have been modernised, and tarmac with a paved edge is the plainer choice.

Ground conditions
The British Geological Survey maps much of Mowden on hummocky glacial deposits of gravel, sand and silt, rather than the heavy clay found across other parts of Darlington. That usually drains better, but pockets vary from street to street, so we still dig a trial area before deciding how deep the base needs to be.
Kerbs and widening
Widening a drive often means widening the dropped kerb as well. Darlington Borough Council treats that as amending a crossing, and the same rules apply as for a new one: the council either does the work or licenses it, and it will refuse a crossing that is too close to a street tree, lamp column or junction. Mowden's tree-lined verges make that worth checking early.
Questions people ask
Can I widen my Mowden drive to fit two cars?
Usually, if the frontage is wide enough and the council agrees to extend the dropped kerb. We measure and check the verge for trees and lamp columns first.
Is resurfacing cheaper than a new drive?
Resurfacing over a sound base avoids excavation and spoil removal, so it usually costs less. It only works if the base underneath is solid.
Does Mowden's ground drain well?
Much of Mowden sits on glacial sand and gravel, which drains better than clay, but it varies. We check on site.
